Gaslight Anthem, Rocco del Schlacko, Saarbrücken, Germany 13th of August 2010

To my great pleasure I had won a ticket for a festival called Rocco del Schlacko which took place near Saarbrücken. I had never heard of that festival before and the only reason for travelling there was originally the fact that The Gaslight Anthem were going to perform there.

Rocco del Schlacko is one of the smaller festivals with about 25.000 people. The line up for Friday included Bad Religion and The Hives after The Gaslight Anthem and so this promised to be a great evening.

Indeed it was. The sound was extremely good (never had such a good sound at a festival) and the bands seemed to have fun as well. The only problem was the area the festival is taking place. The ground was quite dusty so it was hard to breath in the front rows or in the circle pits…

Nevertheless I stayed there for The Gaslight Anthem and this was the first time I saw them live and I was more than impressed.  After Pearl Jam definitely one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen!

They played a bunch of songs of the new album and some of the classics from the 59 Sound and to my great pleasure a cover of Pearl Jam’s s“State of Love & Trust“. Absolutely awesome and with closed eyes it was hard to believe that it wasn’t Eddie Vedder standing there on stage. I would have never believed that this is possible but Brian Fellon made it happen… Thanks for a great show…now I’m pretty stoked seeing them again in Cologne and Neu Isenburg this year!

The pictures have been taken with the iphone again…so poor quality…

Alkaline Trio, Berlin, Germany SO36, 17th May 2010

And again a show of Alkaline Trio. This time in Berlin in the legendary SO36.

Opening act was Three Chord Society and I ended up in buying their CD and getting it signed by the whole band. Alkaline Trio seemed to be in a good mood when they entered the stage. Strange was the fact that Matt Skiba had a black eye. I didn’t realise that until after the show when the whole band took some time to chat with the fans, take pictures and sign stuff. No questions that I didn’t ask …..

Alkaline Trio, Stuttgart, Germany, Wagenhallen 07th May 2010

Stuttgart was the first tour date of Alkaline Trio in Germany 2010. They’ve never played there before and I hadn’t been in that venue before. The location is an old train station at the borders  of Stuttgart and has quite it’s own charm.

We arrived there quite soon as we had departed from work early (knowing the traffic in that direction). It finally turned out that the supporting act Three Chord Society was stuck in traffic and therefor the whole concert started half an hour later. At the entrance I was quite anxious because of the few people standing there but it seemed to fill up after the supporting act even though it was not at all sold out. As this was my first official ALK3 tour date in 2010 I was surprised that there were only that few people and the decision to host a German Alkaline Trio page was made that evening (alkaline-trio.de).

The security didn’t allow flash lights ( I understand that it’s not nice for the band… but that venue was really dark ..) but did a good job during the evening.  For the first time during the European tour the band did the role switch for Fine & the Misfits cover (really thanks for that) and they seemed to have a good time… and so did we…

Alkaline Trio, Luxor, Cologne, Germany 23rd of January 2010

On 23rd of January there was a special show of Alkaline Trio in Cologne. The band was on promo tour for the upcoming record release of „This Addiction“ and played a show in the „Luxor“ in front of 400 people.

When we entered the venue we didn’t know if there would be a support band or not but finally there was a German support named „Lo Parker“ opening the evening. The Luxor was quite crowded but not sold out and Lo Parker did their best to activate the audience.

When the Trio finally entered the stage they directly started with „This Addiction“ and afterwards a very drunken Matt Skiba said hello and explained the audience how it is to drink a campari at Cologne Cathedral at 5 a.m in the morning (with temperatures quite some points below 0). He explained that this would be the first show 2010 and the first show playing some tracks of the new record and we should forgive him if not everything would be perfect.

We didn’t mind at all and the audience was able to  keep up with the lyrics so nobody seemed to care if Matt could remember them or not. A quite awkward moment was a little fight between Dan Andriano & Matt Skiba on stage when Dan yelled at Matt but they seemed to have balanced that until the end of the show, even though Dan wasn’t able to hide the fact that he was quite upset for the rest of the evening (which can be easily seen in the pictures of the concert).

Totally a funny and great evening.

18th July 2009

On Saturday morning we were transfered back to Dublin Airport and I had a flight ticket for Frankfurt. I have to admit that with my knee I was more than happy to get home and had already arranged someone to pick me up and get me straight to the hospital.

The flight itself seemed to take hours (so at least told me the pain in my knee…because sitting in a tiny airplane and not beeing able to bow the knee is pure terror). When we finally reached Frankfurt we needed an whole hour to get through the passcontrol (they had only one counter open…perfect) and then luckily my best friend was already waiting to get me to the hospital. There the big surprise…I was told they could not sew the wound anymore (too late) and they made x-ray-images from my knee to be sure nothing was broken. Finally it took me six weeks to get that one totally healed and I received a lasting memory of that wonderfull Northern Ireland trip, a 5 centimeter scar on my right knee.

17th July 2009

Friday was our last hiking day and we had to pack our luggage again as we were going to spend that last night in Ballymena and not in Derry.

The luggage was stored in the bus which brought us to the Gortin Glen Forest Park. In this park we were going to do two loop tracks. I must admit that I would have prefered another mountain to another forest park as the parks in Northern Ireland are all very likewise and have wood, waterfalls and a little hill in it and we already had two of these, but that part of the tour was only planned for the first half of the day so this was okay.

The bus picked us up again at 2 p.m. and drove us to the Ulster American Folk Park. This is an open-air-museum that shows the history of the the Irish emigrating to USA. The park is made with a lot of love for details and they have transfered houses out of those years in it. We could watch a blacksmith working and we got a very good impression of the living conditions at that time. Really nice is that it is not only showing the Irish part but the American as well, so that after we had walked through a model of a ship we were in a little town showing how life was in the USA at that time. After we had finished the open-air part we proceeded into an exhibition showing details of the situation at that time. I was quite surprised that the immigrants had to pass a health check, which in case they failed meant that they were boarded on the next ship back to Ireland. An absolute no-go has been the suspicion to be mentally ill and I really don’t want to know how they checked for that…

After the Ulster American Folk Park we drove to Ballymena. Here we had rooms in the Adair Arms Hotel. A hotel that could perfectly have been built in the middleage. A lot of corners and small rooms, old decoration, absolutely picturesque. Dinner there was a real adventure as we had problems to figure out what the dessert would be and the explanation of the waiter was not really helpfull. It turned out as to be incredibly sweet and I guess nobody really finished it.

I finally managed to hurt myself on that evening in the hotel by falling UP a staircase after two (or maybe three) pear ciders. With a five centimeter laceration and big bruise on my right knee I had to spend the rest of the evening in the hotel and the others stayed there as well (i fear out of solidarity). Luckily this had not happend at the beginning of the trip. The only possibility to get me into a hospital would have been to call a helicopter to fly me to Dublin, what I absolutely didn’t want (after more than one litre of cider….that would not have been funny) so we fixed the wound with some plaster and I got ice from the kitchen to try to cool my knee. Some pain killer did the rest..so the evening was at least not totally spoiled.
