The Gaslight Anthem – American Slang

The new release of The Gaslight Anthem was one of the releases I was really waiting for. The ’59 Sound is one of the best albums of all times for me and so I was really looking forward to hear new music from this band.

I must admit that I had big problems at the beginning. My first impression was boring. And after I’d listened to it about 3 or 4 times I stuffed it back into my CD shelf and just ignored it there. Disappointed.

About four weeks later I decided to give it a second chance and to my surprise it was a totally different feeling. It’s a grower. Every time I listened to it afterwards made me like it more and more. So finally the whole album was stuck in my head and in my car for weeks until I could figure out which songs are going to make it into my Gaslight Anthem playlist for my iPod. It’s smoother than their first records but nevertheless a great one. My favourite songs of it are definitely “The Spirit of Jazz”, which proved to be a lasting catchy tune and “Old Haunts”. Those are followed by “American Slang”, “Boxer” and “The Diamond Church Street Choir”. Latest was one of those songs that made it so difficult for me to like the record from the beginning on and finally it’s one of my favourite. Weird. I can’t explain it, but that’s the way it is.

  1. American Slang
  2. Stay Lucky
  3. Bring It On
  4. The Diamond Church Street Choir
  5. The Queen of Lower Chelsea
  6. Orphans
  7. Boxer
  8. Old Haunts
  9. The Spirit of Jazz
  10. We Did It When We Were Young

Additionally I have to say that The Gaslight Anthem are an incredible live band. In my ranking of great live bands they are the one to follow Pearl Jam. Anybody who has the chance to see them live, go! I took friends with me to the Cologne show that had never listened to their music before and those were absolutely flashed (and ended up in buying the CDs – perfect).

The Menzingers – Chamberlain Waits

I bought the „I Was Born“ – EP of the Menzingers via I-Tunes in March due to a recommendation and I loved it from the very beginning. So it was absolutely natural that I was looking forward for the full release in April and I ordered directly from Red Scare Industries a small label in Chicago.

The whole album is absolutely awesome. They really rock and I played it quite a lot at work, during diving or during work-out’s in the gym. It’s a fun record and for me it was the most positive surprise of 2010. I wouldn’t have expected to love it that much. I quite hope they’ll stay with Red Scare for a little longer, but as that record was such a success I somehow fear they will end up with a bigger label  for the next album.

My favourite songs of „Chamberlain Waits“ probably are:

  • Who’s Your Partner (strong opener)
  • I Was Born (the beginning reminded me of Alkaline Trio’s Emma, awesome song)
  • Time Tables
  • So It Goes
  • Come Here Often

But as already mentioned there’s no song on the album that is not great.

The tracklist goes as follows:

  1. Who’s Your Partner
  2. I Was Born
  3. Home Outgrown
  4. Deep Sleep
  5. Time Tables
  6. Male Call
  7. Tasker-Morris-Station
  8. So It Goes
  9. No We Didn’t
  10. Rivalries
  11. Come Here Often?
  12. Chamberlain Waits

and by the way..nice that The Menzingers decided to put the song that was responsible for the album’s name at the end of the album and not as obviously common on position one, especially as Chamberlain Waits is a ballad and definitely not prestigious for the album and would have given a wrong impression of the rest.

Unfortunately The Menzingers didn’t tour mainland Europe this year. They only played concerts in the UK and when the UK dates were published it was told that they would play mainland Europe, so I didn’t get a UK ticket for a show. Hopefully I’ll get the chance to see them play live in 2011.

Against Me! – White Crosses

No. 5 of my personal highlights of new releases of 2010 is Against Me!’s „White Crosses“. Unfortunately they cancelled the autumn tour so that I had no chance to experience this live.

When the album was released a lot of people were somehow disappointed, and I’ve seen some really bad reviews. For me this album was great already from the beginning on. As soon as I heard it the first time I loved it. Sure it somehow easier to get into than maybe Reinventing Axl Rose, but times & bands change and for me this is still an Against Me! album, different from the older ones or even the last one, but no way I would say it’s not as good as them. I tortured my co-workers with it for weeks, until most of them were able to hum some of the songs while working and it’s really good for driving huge distances.

For me personally the best Against Me! album so far. I really hope to see them live in 2011!

My favorite songs on it would be:

  • White Crosses
  • Because Of The Shame
  • We’re Breaking Up
  • High Pressure Low
  • Spanish Moss
  • Bamboo Bones

My special edition has 14 tracks, but I think the normal one is finished with Bamboo Bones. The tracklist of my version is as follows:

  1. White Crosses
  2. I Was A Teenage Anarchist
  3. Because Of The Shame
  4. Suffocation
  5. We’re Breaking Up
  6. High Pressure Low
  7. Ache With Me (my least favorit of the album)
  8. Spanish Moss
  9. Rapid Decompression
  10. Bamboo Bones
  11. Ony by One
  12. Bob Dylan Dream (the lyrics of this one are extremely funny)
  13. Lehigh Acres
  14. Bitter Divisions

Iced Flower

We had snow all day and it’s terribly cold outside. Perfect time for a new wallpaper. The picture was originally taken in a nature reserve at river Rhine, Christmas 2007. I left the middle of it coloured and took out the colour around the flower.

CD Releases 2010

As the year is coming to an end I thought it was time for my top 5 albums 2010. But first for the albums I bought as hardcopy during the year. All of them on CD, some of them as well on vinyl. The Pearl Jam CDs are not really „album releases“ but as I was on those two concerts I needed to have the CD.

  • The Gaslight Anthem  – The American Slang (18th of June, Side One Dummy)
  • Good Charlotte – Cardiology (29th of October, Capitol Records / Emi)
  • My Chemical Romance – Danger Days (19th of November, Reprise Records / Warner)
  • The Menzingers – Chamberlain Waits (4th May, Red Scare Industries)
  • Sundowner – We Chase The Waves (10th of August, Asian Man Records)
  • Matt Skiba – Demos (10th of August, Asian Man Records)
  • Stephen Egerton – The Seven Degrees of Stephen Egerton (15th June, Paper & Plastick)
  • Against Me – White Crosses (4th of June, Warner Bros Rec.)
  • Brendan Kelly & Joe McMahon – Wasted Potential (16th March, Red Scare Industries)
  • Alkaline Trio – This Addiction (19th February, Heart & Skull / Epitaph Records)
  • Pearl Jam – Berlin 06-30-2010 (23rd July, Monkeywrench / Pearl Jam)
  • Pearl Jam – Dublin 06-22-2010 (7th July, Monkeywrench / Pearl jam)

The details of the Top 5 will follow one by one until end of December.

Gaslight Anthem, 11th November 2010, Neu-Isenburg, Germany

Third Gaslight Anthem show for me this year took place yesterday in Neu-Isenburg (or Eisenburg .. as the Sharks said) and so far it was the best Gaslight Anthem show I ever attended.

It already started with Chuck entering the stage together with the two Alex’s during the set of the Sharks to join them in a cover song.

Chuck’s set together with John Gaunt was great as always. I must admit I can’t get enough of him playing live, it’s always a pleasure to hear his voice.

The Gaslight Anthem started with „The Spirit of Jazz“ & „The Boxer“ and were in a very good mood. Brian was talking a lot and so we had to comfort their Merchguy Danny during the show who seemed to have had a bad day in Munich. Finally my wish came true and at the end of the main set Chuck Ragan joined them on stage for the 59 Sound. When they left the stage for the encore break Chuck stayed on stage and took his acoustic guitar, if I remember right this was the point where I started to scream slightly hysterical..

Brian and John came on stage and Brian told us that he and Chuck are working on some acoustic stuff that is going to be released on several 7 inch vinyls. He told us they’ll be going to tour with this next year September and that they are planning to include some other friends into that line up and will hit Europa with that (please let one of those friends be Dan Andriano aka The Emergency Room…that would be the best thing ever). Finally they played one of those songs „Good Night Irene“. Awesome, awesome.

Perfect last concert of the year for me. Still stoked with a little tinnitus on the right side. In case the setlist shows up somewhere I’ll post it later on.

Winter depression in November?

Lately I’m extremely tired. Whenever I come near my bed it’s really hard to motivate my body for anything else than sleeping. I don’t understand it at all, as from a rational view I get enough sleep.

During spring & summer time I more or less worked about 60 hours a week, including weekends sometimes even 80. I couldn’t go on vacation as we were short one member in the finance team and so I only took on or two days off for flying or traveling to concerts from Alkaline Trio or Pearl Jam. Those were fun but it was not really relaxing. Additionally in spring the newly setup Blood Pact board kept me busy with membership registrations and when I think about it I can hardly remember a night with more than 5 hours sleep.

Now it’s fall and there are only few concerts. With Gaslight Anthem two weeks ago and the show tonight the party is over, as The Menzingers don’t hit mainland Europe (even though it was announced , which is the reason I didn’t get tickets for London …really disappointing) and Against Me! cancelled there tour dates. Work load isn’t that hard anymore, so I get about 7 hours sleep at night (most of the time at least) and still I’m absolutely tired. I can sleep in the train to work as easily as I can sleep standing in the bus, which both is a new experience for me.

What I’m asking myself is if the reason for being that tired is

a)      fall / winter itself, getting dark sooner, rainy / misty weather

b)      the fact that there are so few concerts (is this where my supply of energy comes from?)

c)      the point that I get 7 hours sleep a night, does that make me tired?

It’s really a pity that I’m not able to use the “new” free time for things I really like to do, like reading a book, playing guitar, sports, taking photos and so on….

It feels like I’m wasting my time with sleeping……

The Gaslight Anthem / Chuck Ragan / The Sharks , E-Werk, Cologne 26th of October

Yesterday Gaslight Anthem had their first show in Germany for this tour and we drove to Cologne. Pretty easy decision as Chuck Ragan was one of the supporters and he alone would have been worth the trip.

Due to traffic jam we were too late for the Sharks (I only heard one or two songs of them) but right in time for Chuck who was accompanied by his violin player. It was a little bit strange when he entered the stage without his beard but I got used to it throughout his set.

Finally Gaslight Anthem entered the stage and they proved again that they’re an awesome live band. The seemed to enjoy the evening and played a two hour set. I’ll provide the setlist if it should turn up somewhere.

For my personal pleasure they played a very good mix of all releases and only like 4 or 5 songs from the new record. This may have been a problem for the part of the audience that only knew the new stuff (unbelievably I really met people only know „American Slang“.

I didn’t drop by the merchandise yesterday, but as I’ll see them again on 11th November I’ll do that for sure, not only to check out the Gaslight Anthem merch but the Chuck Ragan stuff as well (or I hope he has brought some T-Shirts with him)

The only thing missing: Chuck playing a song with Gaslight Anthem or Brian joining Chuck. I hope we’ll get that in Neu-Isenburg.
