Dave Hause with Northcote, Batschkapp Frankfurt, 27th November 2013

Yesterday Dave Hause took the stage at Batschkapp Frankfurt with his lately released album DEVOUR. Those who have already seen him during Chuck Ragan’s Revival Tour 2011 or solo with his record RESOLUTIONS can imagine how incredible awesome those shows are. So now wonder I was absolutely excited to be able to see another Dave Hause show in 2013.

Additionally this time Dave Hause offered a contest via Talent House that allowed always one fan to each show with a photo pass. The contest worked the following. Everybody could submit a picture from any live concert and either the community or Dave could choose who would be the winner for the town applied for. I had the honor to get that chance with one of my Revival Tour pictures of 2012 and therefor was allowed to take my Canon D60 with me into the Batschkapp.

While Dave clearly had the focus on the new songs of DEVOUR and even played piano on two songs (and those from Wiesbaden’s Revival Tour 2011 know what that means) his opening act Northcote, from Canada, proved to be a charming and intoxicating singer-songwriter that has a raspy voice and therefor perfectly fits to Dave when entering the stage with him for some songs. This guy should definitely kept an eye on..I would not be surprised to see him on the next Revival Tour. I can also recommend to give his album NORTHCOTE a chance as it has a bunch of wonderful songs on it.

Below is a best of the pictures taken yesterday evening.

Revival Tour 2013 – Ringkirche, Wiesbaden

It already happened four weeks ago but the impression I got from it is still active in my mind and heart…so here they are, some words to the Revival Tour 2013 in Ringkirche in Wiesbaden.

The members this year were founder and head of it all Mr. Chuck Ragan,  Jay Malinowski (Bedouin Soundclash), Rocky Votolato, Emily Barker and Cory Branan.

For me there were 3 more or less totally unknown in this year’s tour. Jay Malinowski, Emily Barker and Cory Branan.

It turned out that the tour itself started completely different then last year. When we were allowed to enter the church the members of the DeadCoast (strings ensemble) were already standing in  front and were playing and singing which seemed to be totally improvised. Like an Irish song, a Russion after it…it was  a great mix of nearly everything you can play on „Violine, Bratsche und Cello“. They played more or less until the members of this years tour entered the stage. All together (like last year) to play one song of each of them. After that Cory Branan was the one that had to stay behind on stage and start with his solo set.

Cory Branan was touring with his record „Mutt“ which could be bought during the tour. Mutt contains a varity of songs all so different from each other that it is absolutely impossible to ever get the feeling of boredom while listening to it. He has an oustanding voice which can sing deep or high and if you have ever heard him you’ll be always able to pick him from a group of singers. I had listened to „Mutt“ before the tour already, so I knew how different the songs were going to be, but I can cleary say I wasn’t prepared what was going to happen.Cory Branan live is something completely different. I had the feeling he was totally improvising all of the melodies on his guitar throughout the whole evening. I can’t really say if he is able to play a song twice the same time when he plays like that but obviously he’s  a genious when it comes to play guitar. I have never seen someone play with such an amount of breaks and different pickings in every song of his set and it seemed to me that while he was doing a song with Chuck that even Chuck stared on his fingers and couldn’t hide the smile. It left me more or less with my jar dropped open and I can say that when I listen to Mutt nowadays I’m always trying to recall the version he played in that tiny church that night …. no chance I could….but I really would like to hear them after each other. More information on Cory’s album Mutt can be found on his homepage here.

Second on stage was Emily Barker. She’s normally on stage as „Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo“. For those that never listened to one of her songs, she does backing vocals for Chuck in more than one song but the most recent and probably famous example is „Valentine“. Her voice can pretty much do everything from folk to singer songwriter and so she absolutely fits to the stuff Chuck Ragan does when he’s playing solo. Her set was quite folky and soft and as Chuck and Rocky she’s able to play guitar and harmonica at the same time. Additionally it turned out that having her on the tour this time gave the songs she joined a very different touch just because it was a female voice. Unfortunately I missed getting her record during the tour and ended up realizing that it’s not available on German Itunes so far. But more information about her can be found on her homepage where you can buy the music as well here.

Next one on stage was Jay Malinowski and the Dead Coast strings. Jay turned up with a little book and told us in German that they would play the set totally acoustic and that we should shut up 🙂 Then him and the three awesome musicians with viola, violin and cello sat down a little left and started a set that contained a lot of songs that were inbetween Blues, Singer Songwriter or even Jazz. He played the piano quite often and the songs were made for listening with eyes closed to those wonderful and often heartbreaking music. I can not recall having experienced anything similar or near that before. Jay’s voice can be strong and clear, but often has a kind of tone that gives the impression that it’s going to crack in the next seconds and I’m really looking forward to the first full album they are recording just now. Whoever wants in impression can listen to his solo record Bright Lights & Bruises which gives a pretty perfect impression how changeable his voice is. News about him and the upcoming release with the Deadcoast can be found here

On Jay followed Rocky Votolato with his typically singer songwriter music. Like Chuck I’d say he’s known in Germany for his music already. I have no idea why he’s not yet as popular as Chuck (or at least it seems to me that way) but his music absolutely deserves to lay back and just listen. He’ll play three shows in Germany at the end of December and all information about the upcoming dates, his latest release and his music in general can be found here.

Chuck Ragan was last on stage and as always accompanied by Joe Ginsberg and Jon Gaunt who where on and off stage for the whole evening joining all others as well. Chuck is always worth a trip to a concert. I guess I don’t need to say anything to his music as he’s well known, but I can say that I seldom found an artist that open, warmhearted and fan friendly even on stage. During his whole set he seems to enjoy the show. It seems he’s never tired or exhausted and in the middle of the set they moved directly between the church rows and you could see him smile all over his face. I can’t say how much it gives a normal fan the feeling of „wow…he enjoys this as much as we do“ even though we all know…it’s pretty hard work! I don’t think anybody who has seen him live can feel something else than thankfulness and love for that man, his guitar and his comrades Joe and Jon.

Again the Revival Tour has turned out to be a memorable and wonderful night that will be stuck in my head, heart and soul for a long time, giving me the feeling of happiness and hope like nothing else in the world. Please guys don’t stop doing this!

The Revival Tour 2012 – Europe

So while I was on summer vacation the announcement came that Chuck Ragan brings back the Revival Tour to Europe.

Those who were part of last year’s tour already know what they can expect of those concerts: four awesome, breathtaking hours of music played by very talented and often unbelievably unknown artists.

I remember when I saw last year’s tour announcement. I was happy to see Dave Hause on the line up. I had just bought his solo record due to Dan Andriano’s suggestion and found out that I was not able to take it out of my car stereo or from my iPod. I had already heard stuff from the Loved Ones before but never had the pleasure to see them live, so I was looking forward to see him play his solo stuff as part of the tour.

Overall I feel blessed that I had the honor to see the Revival Tour twice last year and Dave Hause has probably become one of my favorite live musicians.

So this year’s Revival Tour brings Chuck Ragan, probably well-known to all the concert goers and

  • Cory Branan
  • Emily Barker
  • Jay Malinowski
  • & Rocky Votolato

Presale has already begun and to my biggest disappointment  the Wiesbaden show is already sold out, so I won’t be able to join it this year 🙁

Dave Hause, Hot Water Music, Pearl Jam, Gaslight Anthem and more

Now and then I think I’m gonna post the content of my present car music. So this is what’s gonna be on this week / month (klick on the picture to enlarge)

June – Car – Mix

Pearl Jam: supplies 2 great songs from the Ten Club Single 2011

Hot Water Music: taken from their latest release „Exister“, which makes awesome car music

The Gaslight Anthem: New single 45 and two of my all time favorites of the 59′ Sound

Dave Hause: The songs are from his recent 7 inch vinyls he’s publishing (a pity that the one of record street day isn’t available in digital version yet). He’s always putting on 2 songs of his release : Resolutions and 2 cover versions of the label’s catalog.

Dan Andriano: The single taken from his split with Brendan Kelly, which for me personally might be the best solo song he’s ever done so far

Billy Talent : new single (totally didn’t recognize there was one until yesterday…so I’m pretty curious what will happen in my car in some minutes)

Alkaline Trio, Electric Ballroom, 10th May 2012

So finally Alkaline Trio was back to London and this years venue was „Electric Ballroom“, which is a good bit bigger than my the last venue I saw them play in London. The concert was originally scheduled for November and had been postponed.

After I had already seen them two weeks beforehand in Stuttgart at Pirate Satellite Festival I was a little bit anxious if Matt would be again that drunk but luckily he seemed to be better than in Stuttgart. Additional bonus was that he didn’t wear the pink shirt but was dressed in a grey one and during the  acoustic part changed to his „Love Will Tear Us Apart“ shirt which suits him so much better in my opinion.

The first on stage were „The Dear and the Departed“ that I only knew from being their opener as well in Atlanta and  I was really looking forward in hearing them. As my place was first row at the beginning I couldn’t understand a word of Dan’s singing and overall the sound was terrible there. So before Dave Hause got on stage I already moved backwards into the middle of the venue which was absolutely fine for Dave’s set. He was joined once by Dan Andriano and again I can only say those two make an excellent duo and I’m really hoping there is going to be a duet of them on one of their next solo albums or a split album. Dave played some songs with an electric guitar this time so I got to here „Heavy Heart“ live for the first time. Needless to say his set was totally excellent as it’s always that way.

Alkaline Trio took the stage 30 minutes after Dave had left and played a normal set followed by an acoustic part. They were twice joined by Dave Hause (for Emma and Clavicle if I remember right) and I had the pleasure to get „You’ve got so far to go“ live this time. Their setlist was unbelievably great.

PIRATE SATELLITE FESTIVAL, 28TH APRIL 2012, STUTTGART,

So yesterday Alkaline Trio played the Pirate Satellite Festival in Stuttgart. The line-up in total was absolutely awesome as additionally Dan Andriano, Chuck Ragan, Dave Hause, Tommy Gabel and Hot Water Music (to name only a few) were playing and so we had 2 hours of Revival Tour before Alkaline Trio took the stage.

Special for this night (for me) was the presence of Heather Gabel, Alkaline Trio’s merchandise creator, who had a part of their table to sell stuff, including her book she made of Alkaline Trio designs of the last 15 years. This and the fact that I finally could lay my hands on the vinyl edition of Resolutions + getting the Dave Hause 7 inch vinyl of Side One Dummy  clearly made my day. The vinyl edition of Resolutions had been sold out last week when I saw Dave Hause playing in Wiesbaden and it seemed that it would always be that way. Finally yesterday I could add the beautiful 2nd pressing to my collection. Additionally they were selling a Dave Hause & Cobra Skulls 7 inch vinyl split .. where the folder had been drawn by various artists and mine is signed and designed by Kevin Seconds…so I’m actually a lucky girl.

Perfect evening , perfect music.

Nessi, Dave Hause & Joey Cape, Wiesbaden Schlachthof, 17th April 2012

The chance to see Dave Hause play a show that nearby my hometown couldn’t be ignored. That was originally the reason for me to get the tickets for this.

Nessi turned out to be a singer-songwriter from Berlin with an awesome voice and the unfriendly job to play first, when the room wasn’t really properly filled. This totally changed when Dave took the stage, who after last year’s appearance during the Revival Tour has quite a big fan community in Germany. He told us he would be in the studio during summer to record the follow up of Resolutions, awesome news, and during the show played two songs of the upcoming record.

1. Autism …… Blues

2. The Depression

His mercy was already completely sold us (besides stickers) and so I failed to buy my Resolutions vinyl copy again.

Joey Cape entered the stage and was pretty hungover, saying that this has been the most exhausting tour so far when it comes to partying and that he has been drinking Irish Coffee all day.

Overall a very nice, funny and relaxing evening in the middle of the week.

Mike Park – Smile

The same day as Dan Andriano’s „Hurricane Season“ was released there was another release through Asian Man Records, this time from the boss itself. Mike Park has released his first full length childrens album called „Smile“.

The songs are perfectly arranged for children: catchy music & perfect lyrics. It’s a fun listen for grown-ups and I’ve catched myself dancing through my flat to „Wiggly Wiggly Worm“ more than once already. I had several kids as test listener meanwhile, before the two CDs that I have will pass on to their destinations. No matter what age they were (9 months to 7 years) they loved it. Especially the first track with his typical Ska appearance is such a good mood song that all of them wanted more directly after that. The songs have the perfect length to keep the kids attention!

Additionally some of the lyrics are not only funny, but even make some sense in a educational way. One of my three year old test kids, even though he’s german and has never spoken English beforehand, was able to count from 1 to 8 in English after listening once or twice to the album. Nice job Mr. Park!

Tracklist (self-explaining)

  1. Wiggly Wiggly Worm
  2. Apples Are My Favorite
  3. Little Green Frog
  4. Everybody Loves To Jump
  5. I Can See The Ocean
  6. 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8..Drums
  7. When The Light Turns Red You Stop
  8. Paint With Me
  9. Turn Off The Lights
  10. Bus Driver Gus
  11. I Love To Play My Saxophone
  12. We All Live At Animal Park

The Horrible Crowes – Elsie

9th September another dearly awaited release came out across Germany. I was in the lucky position to have it two days early due to the fact that I had ordered it in England where the release date was 6th September. The bands name: The Horrible Crowes, which features as member Mr. Brian Fallon and Mr. Ian Perkins. Whereas Brian Fallon is sure known as the singer of the band „Gaslight Anthem“ the genuine fan might not be aware that Ian Perkins is the guitar tech of Brian for exactly that band. So already the notice that Brian would start a new solo project with his guitar tech raised high expectations into that upcoming release.

When the first demos of „Elsie“ could be heared it was absolutely clear that this would not at all be anyhting similar than the music Brian is „normally“ doing with his main band. „Elsie“ contains 12 songs that are totally different from any Gaslight Anthem song and they would definitely not fit on a Gaslight Anthem album. The songs are mostly much calmer and slower, more or less based on Brians voice. I’ve already listened to it some days in my car on the way to work and so far I can say it’s beautiful music. A kind of music that I would rather place in a dark little bar or little club than in a concert venue. Bittersweetness or sadness would be the feelings it carries for me.

The first release „Behold The Hurricane“ is definitely the most uptempo song on the whole record and possibly the one that comes closest to that what is known from Gaslight Anthem. I would not recommend „Elsie“ to fans that mainly stick to the first Gaslight Anthem release. Most of them will directly start to complain and I’m sick of those discussion about  „selling out / mainstream“. And there’s no way to compare it with any Gaslight Anthem album. For anybody who likes high quality deeply touching music with a raspy voice I can only recommend to give it a listen. It’s a wonderful record and I’m quite curious how some of those songs will sound like if they are played during Revival Tour, maybe featuring Chuck, Dan or Dave in them. I believe this is going to be awesome!

For everybody who wants to give it a listen with one or two tracks to decide I’d recommend „Sugar“, „Ladykiller“ & „Black Betty And The Moon“ which are clearly sticking out for me. Followed by „Go Tell Everybody“ or „Crush“

Tracklist:

  1. Last Rites
  2. Sugar
  3. Behold The Hurricane
  4. I Witnessed A Crime
  5. Go Tell Everybody
  6. Cherry Blossoms
  7. Ladykiller
  8. Crush
  9. Mary Ann
  10. Black Betty And The Moon
  11. Blood Loss
  12. I Believe Jesus Brought Us Together

Scorpios – Scorpios

This year is definitely the year of solo / side projects … and another one fell into my lab this morning.  Joey Cape, Tony Sly, Jon Snodgrass & Brian Wahlstrom have a new project called Scorpios ( related to the fact that they have all this same zodiac sign in common) and have released a 10 track album containing 10 awesome, beautiful songs, mostly acoustic.

One of the points that makes this album so incredibly beautiful is the combination of exactly those voices, that are all known through more or less famous punk bands and which couldn’t be more different. A wonderful album for a laid back evening, relaxing on the couch, drinking a glass of wine (or beer)!

For the moment the band distributes the album as a „choose yourself what you want to pay“ download through their own homepage. So everybody is free to choose the amount he wants to pay, and if you regard the fact that in my home country most albums have a minimum amount of 10 Euros (as download) whereas in the States you often get albums for 8 USD ..  I really hope nobody is going to download it for just 1 Cent. It’s really worth a fair amount!

The tracklist is as follows:

  1. Scorpios old
  2. Happy Anniversary
  3. Lifer
  4. We Won’t Speak Of This Again
  5. Daisy Train
  6. Oise
  7. Weighing In
  8. Lonely Parade
  9. Waiting For A Spaceship
  10. Moonshiner
Secondly those 4 awesome musicians are doing a Europe tour this fall. Most of the locations aren’t that big..so make sure you get your tickets quickly.
